Blue Star & Gold Star Marker Programs
Honoring All Who Serve — and Those Who Sacrificed All

The Blue Star Program began in 1944 when the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs planted 8,000 Dogwood trees as a living tribute to World War II veterans. In 1945, the National Council of State Garden Clubs (now NGC, Inc.) expanded the initiative, creating the Blue Star Memorial Highway system with markers placed across the United States, Alaska, and Hawaii. The Blue Star was chosen as a symbol widely recognized from WWII, representing service members actively serving—displayed proudly in homes, churches, and businesses.

The Gold Star Program honors the families of fallen service members. Originating from the custom of hanging service flags—with blue stars for living service members and gold stars for those who had died in service—the program offers honor, hope, and healing to Gold Star Families.
NGC clubs work with these families to place Gold Star Markers in communities as lasting tributes to the ultimate sacrifice.

Garden clubs are encouraged to participate in these meaningful programs. By sponsoring a Blue Star or Gold Star Marker, your club helps preserve the memory of those who serve and those who gave their lives, while providing a place of reflection and gratitude for all.
